Machine To Machine Technology

Machine-to-machine (M2M) is a technology that uses a device attached to a machine to capture an event which is relayed through HMIs, rugged tablets, smart phones or fixed line networks to an application that then translates the event into meaningful information for many purposes. It allows direct communication between machines that function, interact, and share information without any special setup or requirements.


Human Machine Interface (HMI) is the user interface in a manufacturing or process control system. It provides a graphics-based visualization of an industrial control and monitoring system. Previously called a Man Machine Interface (MMI) or Human Computer Interface (HCI), an HMI typically resides in an office-based Windows computer that communicates with a specialized computer in the plant such as a programmable logic controller (PLC) or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).


Cleaning-in-Place (CIP) is now a very common practice in many manufacturing facilities for: dairy, pharmaceutical, processed food, beverage, and brewery plants (among others); replacing manual strip down, cleaning, and rebuilding of process systems. The primary commercial advantage of CIP is the substantial reduction in production downtime, and the ability to utilize more aggressive cleaning chemicals in a contained environment, normally not safely handled with manual cleaning method. The design of the process plant must conform to all documented hygienic design criteria as a pre-requisite to utilizing CIP, and these are extensively documented by the European Standard EN 1672-2.


Projected Capacitive Touch (PCT) is a capacitive technology which allows more accurate and flexible operation, by etching the conductive layer. An X-Y grid is formed either by etching one layer to form a grid pattern of electrodes, or by etching two separate, perpendicular layers of conductive material with parallel lines or tracks to form the grid; comparable to the pixel grid found in many liquid crystal displays.


Industrial Ethernet (IE) refers to the use of the Ethernet family of computer network technologies in an industrial environment, for automation and process control. A number of techniques are used to adapt Ethernet for the needs of industrial processes, which require real time behavior. By using standard Ethernet, automation systems from different manufacturers can be interconnected throughout a process plant. Industrial Ethernet takes advantage of the relatively larger marketplace for computer interconnections using Ethernet to reduce cost and improve performance of communications between industrial controllers.


Process, Hybrid and Discrete manufacturing all require an operator to visualize and interact with the system. The Human Machine Interface (HMI) is that integral part of the machine handling human machine interaction. In complex systems, the HMI is typically computerized. When designing an HMI to visualize the data for your application, there are a number of HMI hardware, HMI, SCADA and thin client software, and operating system architectures available. These architectures can be generalized into thin clients and thick clients; however, a real-world implementation is typically a mixture of both.
